Start with what you control

Horde Defenders asks you to direct the fire of your towers. The official description also says that higher terrain improves range and damage. Those two mechanics are the starting point for this guide.

The notes below are an editorial learning checklist based on the developer’s description. We have not performed a live playtest, measured damage, or verified a best opening build.

A useful first-run checklist

  1. 01

    Watch the route

Before changing a build, notice where enemies converge and where they spread out. Treat those observations as a map of the problems your defense needs to solve.

  2. 02

    Check the aiming mechanic

Practice directing fire while watching both the front of the wave and the outpost. Do not assume the game follows the automatic targeting rules of another tower-defense title.

  3. 03

    Compare positions

Test an elevated location against a flat one when the map allows it. Compare practical coverage, not just the appeal of a position on the minimap.

  4. 04

    Change one variable

On the next attempt, change a position, a tower choice or an upgrade—not all three. That gives you a clearer explanation of what helped.

Think in sightlines, not just tower count

A useful setup gives you room to aim, a clear view of where the wave compresses and enough time to react. When judging a placement, ask what happens after the first group passes it. Does the next angle still cover the route?

This is a general strategy framework, not a claim that a specific tile, tower or formation is optimal in the current alpha.

Record the build before changing progression

The developer currently displays a tech-tree refund notice. Before following an older build screenshot, compare its nodes and costs with the tree you actually see in the game.

A simple record is enough: the date, the visible upgrade names, the map, and what caused the run to end. This makes later patch comparisons much more useful.
